About the Project

The Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education (OACHE) is partnering with several service providers in southern Ohio to launch School 2.0, an initiative to bring 21st-century technology tools to K–12 teachers and students across our region. School 2.0 will specifically focus on using these tools to meet standards while engaging students. For the 2007–08 academic year, nine high schools will be invited to participate.

Focus of the Training

School 2.0 will equip teachers to use new technologies from the READ/WRITE Web as well as other technology tools that are available free of charge. Tools to be presented include (but are not limited to):

    •    Podcasting

    •    Wikis and blogs

    •    Social bookmarking

    •    Online research

    •    Geotagging with Google Earth and Picasa

    •    Media literacy issues

Teachers will develop and control their own projects.  They will be encouraged to explore other possibilities of Web 2.0 applications in addition to those presented at the training.

The School Teams

There will be two components to School 2.0: leadership and classroom teachers. Each school will designate a team of 3–5 people that includes:

    •    1 administrator

    •    1 technical-support person (technology coordinator, media specialist)

    •    1-3 teachers (initial training will be most beneficial for Language Arts and Social Studies, but other curricular areas will also benefit)

Locations and Time Frame

A kick-off meeting for administrators on September 20, 2007 and a full-day training session for school teams on October 11, 2007 will be held at the OSU Endeavor Center in Piketon. The rest of the training will be provided via distance or Blackboard unless on-site training is requested.

Costs

There is no cost to school districts except for employing substitutes and reimbursing mileage for participants (if applicable) to attend training sessions, and costs to provide any requested on-site training. Individuals wishing to earn graduate credit for their participation may do so at their own expense; CEUs will be available at no cost. (See below).

Graduate Credit

Participants may receive 1–2 hours of graduate credit from Ohio University for participating in School 2.0. Individuals will be directly responsible to OU for the costs associated with this option. CEU's will also be available to School 2.0 participants at no cost.
